The story is delightfully heartwarming, and many life lessons can be learned about people and animals, such as love, loyalty, kindness, caring for others and being supportive.

I like that the story was nonfiction. This is an excellent short chapter book to share with children. The
beautiful illustrations add more interest and capture your attention…

Cupid’s Secret is a true story about love and compassion, and the power of learning to trust again. An abused horse that no one wanted, Cupid was small, sickly, and up for sale at the local horse auction. When Farmer Buck saw her, he noticed that hidden under her straggly forelock was a perfect white heart. Even though he didn’t need another horse, he bought her and took her home. He had no idea what special secret Cupid held, he just wanted to give her a second chance at life. In a poignant transformation, Cupid grows from a little frightened mare to a blue ribbon champion, in the end revealing a unforgettable secret that amazes the nation. Soon to be brought to the screen, Cupid’s Secret will warm your heart and remind us all of the potential beauty to be found by simply sharing a little bit of kindness.

From Cupid’s Secret,

by Buck Kalinowski:

…“Gather round, kids,” called Farmer Buck. “This little horse needs some loving. She is weak, skinny and scared. She needs to trust us. I think something has gone wrong in her life. Maybe she was abused. Can you believe she refused to eat a carrot from my hand?”
“Maybe she was in the care of someone who didn’t
understand her,” said one of the kids.
“Maybe she is a wild horse,” said another.
“Regardless of what her past may have been like, it is time
to undo whatever is frightening her. Let’s give her a chance to
have a bright new future. I’ll need your help,” he said.

About the Author

Paul “Buck” Kalinowski, Jr

Paul “Buck” Kalinowski, Jr. discovered at a very young age that he had a great affection and respect for horses. While growing up in the small New England town of Wolcott, CT, he worked at a neighborhood farm learning all he could about handling and understanding these beautiful animals. Buck is proud to still reside in Wolcott, where through hard work and diligence, he built Hillside Equestrian Meadows, a 90-acre equestrian center that is home for nearly 100 horses, as well as cows, llamas, goats, chickens and even a peacock! This beautiful farm became the setting for the true story of Cupid’s Secret. Well respected in both the equestrian and educational communities, Buck continues to be in demand as a unique speaker and entertainer. Both Buck and his horses have made special TV appearances, most notably Alan Thicke’s Animal Miracles, sharing their special story of hope and second chances. Feeling blessed by what life has given him, Buck feels a need to give back to the community. He spends most of his time working with his students at Hillside Riding Academy, a sponsored equine training program for adults and children, featuring over 1700 graduating students, and producing some of the country’s top competitors in both English and Western disciplines. Buck especially enjoys sharing the special qualities of horsemanship with young audiences, most recently in his much-requested History of Horses program featuring an authentic 1881 stage coach ride, as well as his Cupid Goes Green! conservation program. Buck is also the author of Kitty’s New Friend, Lovie and the Meaning of Friendship, and The Adventures of Arrow.
